Scotland 4 days

We're booking a last minute trip to Scotland August 20-25. We fly into EDI on the 21st (early morning). On the 21st night I have tickets to the Tattoo, and we have a hotel booked for the night of the 21st and the 22nd. That gives us two full days in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe Festival, etc.

We fly out of Glasgow on the morning of the 25th (10:30 am). We were wanting a nice feel for the countryside, and are considering renting a car for two days. We're wondering if it is reasonable to stay out of Edinburgh for the other two nights...maybe take the drive to Inverness, stay a night, then drive back to Glasgow for the night before departure? Or should we just stay in Edinburgh and do day trips out?

There is probably plenty to see around Edinburgh at Festival Time if you are interested. If you want to see the countryside given your timescale I'd look at Perthshire rather than Inverness. You'll still be in the highlands. Pamela is the one to listen to about Perthshire, but you've got Dunkeld, Loch Tay, Scone etc.

Yes, if you want the countryside and not necessarily have to drive all the way north, Perthshire is a great option. I do like Dunkeld, mostly because I want to be there at night to go to music sessions at The Taybank. :) And there are plenty of options either east, west or north from there. You can easily get to Scone Palace if you've a yen for history.

I also like Aberfeldy. You can do a walk up the Birk's of Aberfeldy, drive over Schiehallion on a wee road to Loch Tummel or you can drive out Glen Lyon...beautiful drives. There's a great hotel in Aberfeldy, Ailean Chraggan. The Cranog Museum is interesting. You can also do the same tours to the north although you've a bit of a drive over to the A9.

The Trossachs are another area. I think I would stay in Callander. The steamboat ride on Loch Katrine is fun. Rent bikes and peddle back or take the round trip. You can explore Balqhidder where Rob Roy MacGregor is buried. This would probably be most comfortable for reaching the 10:30 AM flight.

Lots of choices.

Thanks Pam, some fantastic ideas. We are flying out of Glasgow on Monday at 1030, so maybe we will work our way up to Dunkeld then around to Loch Lamond...is it reasonable to stay Sunday and drive to GLA early Monday to get to 1030?

Dunkeld to Glasgow Airport is about 80 miles. Once you are past Perth it is dual carriageway all the way so it is doable. But you have to take into account getting through Glasgow at rush hour. It depends on when you need to check in, but the M8 at rush hour through Glasgow can be dead slow and stop.
