Hi Sarah
Interested as to why you'd stay the night near Kyle and then have a few nights on Skye. Might be easier to just stay in the one place on Skye unless there's a particular reason for wanting to stay near Kyle. To give you an idea on distances Kyle to Portree (main village on Skye) would take about 45 minutes by car.
Also any particular reason for staying in Invergarry? There's not much there. Might be better to press on towards Loch Rannoch and have a couple of nights in that area.
Also weather is likely to be very variable at that time of year. The days will be shortening and you could well experience wet and windy conditions. Also some restaurants (e.g. on Skye) are likely to be reducing hours or closing as the season is coming to an end.
We have unpredictable weather year round, but October is not my favourite time of year on Skye (and I live here!).
For driving you will find lots of 'single track roads' on Skye. These are one carriageway where the traffic in both directions shares the same bit of road. There are passing places at regular intervals. You always keep left, so if you need to stop but the passing place is on the right, you stop opposite the passing place, the car coming the other way pulls into the passing place and then you move on to let the other out of the passing place. It is important to note that passing places only fit one or two cars, so don't allow yourself to get into a long convoy of vehicles. You also need to be able to reverse if the nearest passing place is behind you. Best advice is also to keep an eye in the driving mirror and pull over to let faster moving traffic pass you. We also always wave to acknowledge people letting us through or yielding for us in passing places. Also outside of towns gas stations are sparse. Always fill up when you are in a town. Supermarkets tend to have the cheapest petrol and diesel. Also don't be persuaded to rent an electric car. There are very few charging points in the Highlands and here on Skye they are often not working!
