Sampling the North Coast 500: Starting in Ullapool and ending in Inverness

I am trying to build out the last few days of our May trip to Scotland and need some advice. We're spending Wednesday night in Ullapool after a couple of days on Harris/Lewis. We fly out of Inverness on Saturday morning. We'd like to sample a bit of the North Coast 500 drive, and I'm wondering if it would be better to (A) drive south from Ullapool through Wester Ross, staying somewhere on that route on Thursday night; or (B) drive north from Ullapool through Durness and stay in Thorso on Thursday night. On Friday we'd head back to Inverness, staying there that night and flying out Saturday morning.

From what I'm seeing, it seems like option A would give us more dramatic scenery, so I'm leaning that way, but wanted to throw it out to the community to get your thoughts. Also interested in suggestions on where to stay if we go with A.

Thanks!

Jim

Both....sort of.
Try and include the loop round to Lochiver,Assynts mountains are particularly striking.
Very excellent pies in Lochinver.
The Inn at Badachro is another favourite has decking overlooking the bay ,food very good too.
The view from the outdoor deck at the Applecross Inn is worth stopping for a while too, they have a food shack type thing outside ,a table inside is like snagging a winning lottery ticket.
You might want to see if the Screen Machine the touring cinema is in the area.

Over at the LC ,(Lochcarron Hotel) the locals are friendly ,spent about a week in the village.
Then returned 3 more times on my trip
The museumn at Aultbea is worth a look around.
Long days in May and it will before the heaviest of the summer trade has kicked in.Fantastic part of the world
