RS Scotland tour and what else

Fell in love with Scotland and want to go back next year. We are considering taking the RS tour. What should we add, either before or after, for a more complete experience of the country. I think more time in the Highlands and Oban. Also, islands. We will have additional 5 days on the ground to add. Please advise us and where to stay, etc. We will not be using a car since do not want to stress out re driving on the left. Also if known, hotels, b&bs, restaurants. Thanks, Gladys

We're making our first trip to Scotland next June so I can't give you advice except that if you're on Facebook, check out the Scottish Travel Society Page, the members are incredibly responsive.

Hi Gladys, where did you go on your last trip?

Without a car, you may want to think about day tours from different locations. If you do them all out of Edinburgh or Glasgow you can get lengthy bus times. Scotrail has good map that shows where the rail lines go. Note that there is no "circle tour". You can connect from the west up to Inverness via the bus. The islands like Orkney and the Hebrides are difficult without a car. So, I would suggest staying on the mainland. Smaller towns like Dunkeld/Birnam or Pitlochry are on the highland line north through the center and offer some change from the cities. On the other hand, you can get nice day trips out of Inverness. Have you found Undiscovered Scotland? It is very helpful. Here's their feature page for Dunkeld.
