Route options from Perth to Crail

We will be driving south from Inverness, enjoying stops along A9 and ending our day in Crail. We are trying to decide which route to take, once we get down to Perth, as there appears to be two main options to get to Crail. Is there one driving route vs the other that folks prefer?

1) From Perth, down and over through Cupar and then to Crail?
Or
2) A9 -A90/A85 to Dundee and take the Tay R. Bridge down through St. Andrews and into Crail?

(Not certain we need to see St Andrews on this trip. I'd considered stopping to see the ruined cathedral - but we will be seeing some lovely ruins in other places.)

Thoughts, suggestions? We leave in about a month and can't wait!
Thanks so very much!

I think the Cupar route wins hands down for scenery.

The A85 Perth to Dundee is just a busy main, fast highway.

Last time I was on it there were fairly minor roadworks, and the road became one giant car park. It was a 45 minute delay that time between Perth and Dundee due to the volume of traffic

And there are currently long term roadworks on the Tay Bridge, or were in June. Traffic was flowing well then, but you never know if the roadworks could cause delays.
