Route options from Inverness back to Edinburgh over 2 days

We are traveling to Mull and Isle of Sky then to Inverness. after that we have 2 days to work our way back to Scotland. I am hoping to get suggestions which is the best way to do this. Do we go north and stay in Aberdeen or cut down towards Edinburgh
any suggestions will be really appreciated. I am planning this for myself and 2 others so feel very responsible.

Aberdeen is on a valid route back to Edinburgh as it is South (not north) of Inverness.
You could easily take a whole day to get to Aberdeen either going along the coast, or via Speyside and Dufftown then the A96.
The next day could be another full day via Stonehaven, Dunnottar Castle, the A92 down the coast through Montrose and Arbroath then the Kingdom of Fife through Crail and Anstruther.
That route could easily be a 3 or 4 day road trip which may be its chief drawback.
It really depends on your interests as the A9 route could easily be 2 days with stopovers.
The key to this is balancing the interests of the three of you. Without knowing that we are kind of stabbing in the dark. Have you discussed with your travel partners what they want to get out of the journey?

Hi, hammondlmk,

Your question is a bit confusing. You stated that you have two days to work your way back to Scotland. I have to assume that you mean Edinburgh, not Scotland. Is Edinburgh your point of departure from Scotland?

If you are travelling east to Aberdeen, then south to Edinburgh, you could follow isn31c's recommendation, and follow the coast road around to Fraserburgh, then down the North Sea coast to Aberdeen and south. There are some delightful fishing towns and villages along the Moray Firth coast. Places like Buckie, Portsoy, Gardenstown, Crovie, Pennan, and Cullen. You can break off from the coast at just about any time, and head diagonally south to Aberdeen.

Aberdeen to Edinburgh is a little over three hours by car if you drive straight through, but you definitely do not want to do that. The coast road to Dundee takes you through Stonehaven, Montrose, and Arbroath; Inverbervie, St. Cyrus, and Lunan, all of which are worth a visit.

Whichever road you take, I'm sure that your companions will appreciate.

Best wishes,
