route from Edinburgh Airport to Kelso/bypass

I would like to take some back roads to get to Kelso because I enjoy the scenery and small towns vs the motorway. Does anyone have suggestions of an alternative route from EDI to Kelso?

Also, regardless of the route I take, I believe I will need take the City of Edinburgh Bypass for a few miles at least.....I heard that can get congested. Will driving at 10 am on a Friday be fairly quiet?

Thanks!

I would like to suggest a wonderful book, Exploring Rural Scotland. I checked and it is available on Amazon.

One thing to think about would be to head south and then head east down the Tweed Valley. This will take you through the other abbey towns--Melrose and Dryburgh. Also, you drive near Scot's View, which is a well known beautiful view of the Eilden Hills.

I hope that MC will chime in here or Unclegus.

Usually quieter at that time. The A8 and the A720 will be the only sections of dual carriageway. Popping into Roslin Chapel is an option, just off the A720 at Penicuik, and you can get down to Kelso via Selkirk and Melrose on that route.

A little navigational hint, is that area is the only bit of Scotland where the road numbers begin with a 6. Most 6 roads are in England. The main road nearest to Kelso is the A68.

If you get lost look for 6.
