Return to Edinburgh Airport from Glencoe - Affordable Accommodation

Hi all,

I'm heading back with a rental car from Glencoe to Edinburgh Airport on a Friday June 6. I was hoping to return the car at the airport and spend an evening at one of the hotels closest to airport and leave on a flight at 11am on Saturday. The hotels are all close to $400..... poor planning on my part. As of now, I'm paying $370 to stay at the Doubletree and trying to figure out a different option.

I have two ideas/questions that I would love help on:
1. Does anyone know a decent accommodation outside the city that would be easy to get to the airport on Sat early and drop off the car and have time for the 11am flight. I hate to be stressed and hurried in an airport I'm not familiar with.
2. I haven't purchased the return airline ticket on Sat. and could possibly stay two nights (FRI/SAT) outside the city and explore Edinburgh on Saturday and fly out Sunday at 11. Perhaps still return the car and public transportation to and from airport and city center. It's just looking like approx $800 (two nights hotel) to visit the City for a single day.

Hate to skip a visit when I'm so close and don't know if I'll return.

Thank you for any support here.

I just checked the rate for that day at the Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh Airport where we stayed last year and it is $284 — not great, but better than $400. The hotel was fine. I’m sorry I don’t remember what we paid, but I believe it was over $200.

Hotel prices in Edinburgh are high.

The Moxy Hotel at the Edinburgh Airport is asking 238 GBP for the night of 6 Jun.

Edinburgh Airport is not very big.

Several years ago, we left Glencoe in the morning. drove through a torrential rainstorm for several hours until lunch, and finally reached Stirling about 5:00PM. Our rental car was due the next morning, before our flight later in the morning.

We stayed at a B&B somewhere between Stirling and the airport, not a long drive, and very easy to quickly drop off the car in the lot and walk straight into the terminal. I regret that I don’t recall the B&B, or exactly where it was located. I do remember that they had pet rabbits in a hutch in the back, but that’s it. The price was good, as was the breakfast, which we had time for before driving to the airport. It might take more searching to find a suitable B&B, but they are out there. If that would mean paying for an extra day’s car rental for you, though, it might not be as viable.

Holiday Inn Express at the Ocean Terminal at Leith is available for £211 that night. It is right on the tram line to the airport and on the Skylink 200 bus route to the airport- which runs from 0300 to 2300 7 days a week. It takes 45 minutes so is as fast if not faster than the tram.
The Premier Inn website is down until 0500 tomorrow- but might be worth checking that, A Friday night in Edinburgh any time of the year will always be expensive, Saturday night even more so.
Expensive in an already expensive city,

The Stirling Highland Hotel in Stirling City Centre is on for £134 that night. Easy and quick to reach by train, Direct buses to the Airport at 0620 and 0700- take the earlier one for safety- a 60 minute bus journey.

Thank you all. I've checked all the suggestions and looked up prices. I'm thinking staying in Stirling or somewhere in between there and the airport and getting up early and leave by 6:15a and return the car by 7:30a and to the terminal by 8a for my 11am flight. Hopefully not stressful.
Thanks again!

Hi

Have at look at Holiday Inn Express, either in Stirling (note it's an i not an e) or Dunfermline (quite a bit closer to the airport). Also as isn31c suggests, Premier Inn is a good shout.

There's also Highland Gate near Stirling, very close to the motorway that would lead you to the airport. It's similar to a Premier Inn.

There's also a Doubletree in North Queensferry - a short hop to the airport. Usually quite a bit more expensive than the others I've listed, but very nice.

I have stayed in all these places and they are all fine for one night. Holiday Inn Express includes breakfast in their rates. The others do not, but it's not that expensive.

Stirling South Premier Inn at junction 9 of the M9 is just £73 that night.

I doubt you'll beat that.

Their Dunfermline property is £82 that night.

Last Spring we flew into EDI from Shetland and took a quick Brightbus into Haymarket in town. We stayed at the Brooks Hotel for £137 for a very clean and pleasant stay with a good included breakfast. Easy Airport Express back to EDI. That gave us a great evening enjoying a Scottish session at Diggers, just a pleasant walk away, although that's a function of day-of-the-week. We never waste an evening at an airport!

You are looking at booking at the airport far too early. If you do some mock dates closer to today the prices are reduced dramatically . Just wait a while and book a couple of weeks out - the 2 Hiltons at the airport never get booked out!

We stayed at the Edinburgh Dakota the night before our flight home. And we came from Glencoe and Stirling Castle. The Dakota is about 10 minutes from the airport. The Dakota provides a complimentary shuttle van service to the airport for its guests. We were two couples. The men dropped off the women (with our luggage) at our hotel first. Then they returned the car to the airport, and took a taxi back to the Dakota.

The Dakota has a very, very nice bar and restaurant. I believe the chef is an award-winning chef. Our meals there were delicious, and so was the breakfast buffet (including some hot-cooked dishes) the next morning.

I remember the rate was very reasonable, under $200USD. This was in June 2023. It is very strange to me that the Doubletree is $400. Is there some special event going on? Such as a rock concert?

Hi, ricklscott333,

If I were you, I would go with isn31c's recommendation of the Premier Inn Stirling South. It's just off the M9, which will get you to EDI in about 40 to 45 minutes. It's only 30 miles. And 73 pounds is an excellent price! I've stayed at that PI before. It's not the Ritz, but it's clean and comfortable, and within a short drive of restaurants in Stirling, if you decide not to eat at the hotel.

Even if you decide to alter your plans and travel in to Edinburgh for that extra day, you'd save a lot of money by staying at the PI for two nights, and commuting back to Stirling.

Best wishes, and Happy Holidays!

Mike (Auchterless)
