Renting a car on the Isle of Skye

The Rick Steves guidebook recommends DriveSkye for car rental on the Isle of Skye. Over the last couple weeks I have sent them emails, left voicemail, and used their web form. No response. Hmmm.

The Portree Hotel, where we will be staying, suggested contacting Morrisons, instead. I just sent them an email. Hopefully we'll have better luck with them.

I'm just wondering if anyone on this forum has experience with renting a car on the Isle of Skye and any tips to share.

Honestly, we'd prefer to rely on public transportation. But all guidance says that's impractical on the Isle of Skye. This will be the only area during our visit to Scotland where we will rent a car. We have international drivers licenses (thank you AAA) and rented a car in Greece, Croatia, Spain, and France, previously. This will be our first time driving on the "other" side of the road.

I used Morrison’s in July 2022 for 4 days. I arrived by ferry in Armadale, and for an extra fee they brought it to me there - and I left it in Uig at the ferry terminal. All good - no problems except I had to wait about 10-15 minutes in Armadale. I met someone from another company doing the same thing, but don’t remember who it was.

I don't know why they don't reply, but could it be the Christmas shutdown, the fact that Skye is out of season so many things are shut up anyway, there has just been Strorm Pia following two or three other storms after Babet, and there has been flooding and very heavy rain on the west of Scotland.

Or could the response have fallen behind the sofa? By which I mean into your spam folder.

Is this for a trip very soon?

I haven't heard of DriveSkye. I imagine they would be a very small family run business.
Most people seem to use Morrison's when renting a car in Skye. I don't think many people would actually rent a car in Skye so the businesses are going to be quite small.

DriveSkye are based at Armadale, so are for people arriving off the Mallaig ferry as foot pax , connecting from the Glasgow/Fort William train.

Morrisons are a tiny company and their main business is car repairs. I have used them myself to rent a car when mine's been off the road. They are very helpful and I would definitely recommend them. They are highly likely to be closed from now until after Hogmanay (New Years). If you've not heard back by 5th Jan I'd suggest phoning them in office hours. They are certainly your best option unless you want to try Morar Motors in Kyle.

Public transport is terrible on here. The buses are based largely around the school day and getting kids to the high school in Portree. They do not visit tourist sites!

Thank you for the helpful replies! It's reassuring to hear good experiences and familiarity with Morrisons. I'll wait until early January and give them a follow-up phone call during the business day. Thanks, again!

UPDATE: I received a friendly email from Morrisons this morning, so I will move forward to reserve a car with them for the Isle of Skye. Thanks, again, for the helpful tips from this community! Happy New Year!
