Traveling with 8 adults at the end of June. Tentative plan is to fly from Dublin to Glasgow, spend a few hours in town and then head to Ft. William for two nights then to Edinburgh for three nights. I know we won't need a car once we get to Edinburgh but was wondering if we should return from the place we rent from in Glasgow, or return in Edinburgh. How far in advance should we rent our cars? We've never rented cars on our other trips to Europe so this is all new to us.
For 8 people I would take the train, or at least rent 3 vehicles.
I don’t understand “how soon.” Reserve now then cancel and reserve again if the price goes down.
For May, I'm renting a car in Edinburgh and returning it to Glasgow. There was no extra charge.
You're unlikely to find a car to fit 8 adults. You'll either need 2 cars or you'll need to rent a mini bus. Even the largest people carrier (what you'd call a van in the States) is generally a 7 seater. And there'd be no space for luggage.
Maybe see if Rabbies will do a private hire for you.
I don't know what size of vehicle a US licence allows you to drive (may vary state by state), but my UK licence allows me to drive Rabbies size vehicles. I used to do so quite regularly.
Or, if only going to Fort William, there is no reason why you can't take the train.
