Can anyone tell me how far one has to take the trail in order to get a fair look at the Old Man? My husband and I are not seasoned hikers and I want to be realistic about how far we can hike in order to get a good glimpse and photos if the weather cooperates. Thank you!
We did not do the walk, but got photos from the road, camera with a decent zoom will get okay pictures. This website is excellent. There is a slide show that shows the walk with photos of what you'll see at each stage.
We ended up accidentally hiking up the entire thing, not realizing that if we drove around the bend past where you enter to hike up, we'd get a great shot. It's not a terribly crazy hike, though fairly steep, but the views from up top, or even half-way up, are pretty spectacular on a nice day.
You can get a great view from the road....or depending on where you can find a place to park, just walk up the hill a bit and try to get a view without all the people on the trail.
When you are actually there. you'll figure out the lay of the land....you can see the Old Man from far away...use a telephoto lens if you have to...
