Recommended Places Between Stonehaven and St. Andrews

Can anyone recommend a place between Stonehaven and St. Andrews for a one night stay? I’m not asking for specific accommodations, but for towns and villages. Many thanks in advance.

I haven't stayed there, but Arbroath looks to may be similar to Stonehaven is town is preferred.

Arbroath and Montrose are the two larger towns between St. Andrews and Stonehaven.

Of course, you will be going through Dundee which has a much larger selection of hotels.

Brechin if going in land.

Arbroath is also one of the most important places in Scottish history. The abbey is where the Declaration of Arbroath was signed.

At Andrews to Stonehaven is only about 2 hour drive so could be done in a day...

Are you planning to take the coastal route, if so Arbroath (ruined abbey, St Vigeans stone museum, Seaton Cliffs) or Montrose (Hertitage trail, House of Dun)

would be possible stops.

If taking the inland route, then there are places like Kirriemuir, Forfar or Brechin. These are all smal, typically Scottish towns. Brechin has a cathedral. Edzell is smaller and quieter and a planned Georgian town. The ruined Edzell castle is a few minutes drive.

Alternatively head up one of the Angus Glens. These are still very much the undiscovered part of scotland and don't get many foreign visitors. Each one is differfent and scenically thay are all good. There is less choice of accommodation as much is S/C but you could splash out and spend a night at either Glen Isla Hotel or Glen Clova Hotel.

I appreciate the recommendations! Very helpful! My son and I are planning to drive from Charlestown-of-Aberlour to Stonehaven that morning, so I’m wanting to break up the two hour drive from there to St. Andrews so we’re not completely wiped out by the end of the day. Thoughts?
