Recommended activities/Day Tours in the Highlands?

Hello,

I have a tour guide booked 9 day trip through the highlands - but they allow for your own downtime throughout the stay and I was just wondering if anyone had any specific activities/day tours/boat trips/non crazy long hikes etc that they would recommend anywhere from oban- plockton-ullapool-inverness-orkney islands...

Thank you everyone:)

We used Blair Atholl as our base and loved walking the thousands of acres of Blair Castle. We also did a day "loop drive" from Blair Atholl to Loch Ness and back. There is also a nice summer theatre in Pitlochry.

I really enjoyed the day trip to Mull/Iona from Oban. From Inverness it's easy to see the Culloden battle field and Clava Cairns. On my drive from Inverness to Gairloch I stopped at Ullapool for lunch and along the way I stopped and did a short walk through the woods to Rogie Falls, I also stopped at the Inverewe Gardens. If you are with a guided tour they may do some of these things, though.

Unless you are tired of manor houses, I can recommend Dunrobin Castle north of Inverness. It looks imposing but is actually rather compact for all of its rooms, which wrap around an inner courtyard with the original 13th century keep still intact. The decor is pretty eclectic, with a very neat Art Deco bathroom in the midst of the Victorian style in other rooms. The gardens are similarly efficiently laid out, and there is the falconry area with an expert giving twice daily exhibitions with his birds. We even had a lovely chat with a woman who was putting together a massive floral arrangement, who had worked there her whole life.

It was my favorite grand house on our trip in 2012.

Here are some ideas:

  • A great hike--it a full day!--is around Glen Affric.
  • Walk in the hills above Ullapool. Wonderful views from the top of Ullapool hill.
  • For the more ambitious Stac Polly.
  • On Orkney go to Hoy for some walks.
  • Go to Applecross. I've not hiked there but it is amazing. You look on WalkHighlands for walks.
  • In Inverness, they have boat tours of the Moray Firth where you look for dolphins. I had a nice boat ride, but no dolphins.
  • If you just want a walk on the beach, then go to Culbin Sands near Nairn East of Inverness.
  • Ardnamurchan Penninsula is a beautiful place without many visitors. It would be a lovely day trip.

There are lots more things, but this is a start.
