We will be visiting Scotland in early June and are looking for a quaint place to stay near some of the Speyside distilleries. Any recommendations?
It isn't 'next to' any of the Speyside distilleries, but we love it. The Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore!!! It is across the street from the rail station and looks exactly like a little castle. Inside it is like a Scottish Hunting Lodge. The food in their restaurant and pub is excellent. You can take buses or the train to many of the distilleries, or there is a 'whisky taxi' service you can use to do trips to whisky day trips (you can visit several in a day that way). Speyside whiskies are our favorites. If you get a chance, try Dahlwhinnie Distillers' Special Edition, or for a very special (and very, very expensive) special treat, try Dahlwhinnie 25 year.
The Grant Arms in Grantown-on-Spey is good.
Personally, I don’t care for Aviemore - it’s a bit characterless and cheesy with more modern development and therefore less character than Grantown. Nearby Boat of Garten (love the name!) and Nethybridge are much prettier IMO. There is plenty of highly rated accommodation here.
Would you consider an AirBnB on a farm? We stayed here and LOVED it. It was inexpensive and they couldn't have been nicer. Peaceful and chickens came right up to our door. We were in striking distance of so much and loved being able to see some stars.
Thanks all for the information! Although I didn't specifically book any of the suggestions, your advice helped me figure out what I was doing. :)
Toni - would you have more information on the Whisky Taxi? How did you find them?
