Recommend Traveling by Bus or Train Between Oban and Glasgow?

In journeying from Oban to Glasgow, is there a marked difference in traveling by bus or train in terms of the route (what one might see), comfort or ease of travel, etc.? Rome2Rio identifies the bus as “recommended, cheapest” (2h 58m) and the train as “second fastest, second cheapest” (3h 7m). The difference in cost is negligible as is the time. Is the slight difference in cost and time the reason the bus is recommended?

It appears that the routes are very similar until one reaches Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. The bus route seems to follow closely (or fairly closely) the western edge of Loch Lomond. The train route follows Loch Lomond for a bit and then travels farther west, closer to the shores of Loch Long and Loch Gare. At least, this is how things appear on Google Maps.

Everything between Oban and Glasgow will be new territory for me and my husband. He visited Scotland years and years ago (though not this area); I have never been.

If it makes any difference in which you might suggest, we would be traveling this route (one of these routes) in the last days of May 2022 if travel is not disrupted again due to continuing issues with Covid-19.

I did this route by train, so I can't really comment on the bus aspect. I did enjoy the train and felt it was scenic most of the time. One thing I enjoy about train vs. bus is the ability to get up and move a bit if needed and that using the restroom is less of an issue.

I would also recommend taking the train because it is offered ten times a day. You might be able to get a sale price if your ticket is purchased in advance. Are you visiting Oban for a day trip or to ferry to the Islands? There are several tours available from Glasgow to Oban which include Glencoe, etc. Look at www.visitscotland.com it is great site that links you to a trove of info. Good Luck.

of course trains are much smoother and don't lean around roundabouts

Another vote for the train. More comfortable, you can get up and move around, use the loo, etc.

Also keep in mind that a train won't get stuck in traffic or road construction, so the estimated journey time is probably more accurate than the bus.

I am seeing Advance Single Fare at £15.30 on Scotrail website
Suggest you consult www.seat61.com for information on rail travel in UK including how to book tickets from abroad
I would not use Rome2Rio if you want accurate information

Nationrail.co.uk is the place to check rail schedules and start the ticket-buying process.

Travelinescotland.com is the source I used for bus schedules. It does include rail schedules, but I found it sometimes differed from nationalrail.co.uk, which I consider the official source.

UK coaches are in general pretty good, and UK trains are small and cramped compared to the rest of Europe. But I'd still recommend the train as it wins on comfort.

Wow, thank you, everyone. There is so much helpful information here. We will definitely opt for the train.

To answer one question that was posed regarding our visit to Oban, we are planning to take the train from Mallaig to Oban (after crossing on the ferry from Armadale). I have booked two nights in Oban. I am currently thinking on our full day after arrival we will take the ferry from Oban to Craignure and then a bus to Tobermory to spend the day. (My knowledge of how to get from one place to another is based on what I have gleaned and retained from guidebooks and online, including this forum. (I am open to other ideas and had been considering a day trip to Mull, Iona, and Staffa, which is mentioned in the latest Rick Steves guidebook and on his suggested itineraries for Scotland.)

Thank you for the advice on the websites I should visit for more accurate and helpful information, and the info about Rome2Rio.

It looks like you made your decision. I was going to say that I took the bus between Glasgow and Glencoe. I navigated the whole experience pretty easily. The coach was fine and I enjoyed the route. It followed Loch Lomond for a bit, but what fascinated me the most were all the backpackers hiking the Highlands. They were using the bus between various stages and they were all ages and all nationalities. You could see the hikers on the trails from the bus. It sounds like you have a great trip ahead of you.

I've done both those side trips from Oban. My first choice would be the West Coach Motors trip to Mull and Iona (I didn't make it to Staffa). We got some interesting commentary on the dedicated buses across Mull; I don't think you'd get that if you just hopped on a scheduled public bus. The self-arranged ferry/bus trip to Tobermory was worthwhile but not as interesting to me.

Note that western Scotland gets a lot of rain. If you give yourself only two nights in a place like Oban, that allows just one day for a full-day excursion. You won't have the flexibility to postpone the Mull/Iona/(Staffa) trip if that day is extremely wet. I know it's hard to allocate what seems to be an extra day to a town when there are lots of places you want to go, but I had quite a few days that were seriously marred by rain. I was glad I hadn't scheduled myself excessively tightly. Even so, there were several things I wanted to do that just didn't happen because I didn't have enough good days while I was staying in Oban and on Skye.

When you travel by public transportation (as I also did), you don't have the same degree of protection from bad weather that car travelers have. When it's time to leave to catch the bus, you need to do just that, even if there's rain pouring down.

While it is possible to travel by train from Mallaig to Oban, my suggestion would be to take the train from Mallaig to Fort William and a bus from there to Oban.

I would second Badger's opinion. To take the train from Fort William to Oban is possible, and over Rannoch Moor is one of the more spectacular journeys in GB by rail, it would be a faff having to change. Taking the bus on that journey would be quicker and cheaper.

For the journey from Oban to Glasgow I'd recommend the train. The landscape is worth it.
