Recommend a hotel or BnB in Isle of Skye for family of 5

We are looking for a two night stay in Isle of Skye for a family with three kids ages 20, 18 and 14. It seems that for most of the hotels it's over $1,000 for two nights and since we are traveling for a month we would like to keep to a level above backpacking but reasonable.

Anybody have an insider ideas?!

Thanks,
Marni

I don't know what $1,000 is equal to in GBP but it sounds expensive.

I also don't know when you plan to do this trip but Skye is a very popular place to visit and demand for accommodation is high. I'd guess accommodation providers can pretty much name their price and get it. Supply and demand and all that.

Back in 2014 I tried to secure B&B accommodation on Skye for three nights in August. Not my ideal choice but it was dictated by circumstances at the time. I was trying to book accommodation in May of that year for August and found it impossible.

Then I decided to look off the island and headed for the Kyle of Lochalsh and straight away found somewhere to stay and at a reasonable price. Perhaps you should try there? Lochalsh is close enough to Skye for it not to matter timewise.

Also five is a bit of an awkward number for some places to accommodate. Bed and Breakfasts are quite small and really should only have three letting rooms to accommodate six people maximum. That's what it was when I did B&B. Guest Houses are larger with 5-7 rooms. Hotels of course are different again. You're going to need two rooms minimum; a double or twin for the adults and a triple for the children. Will they be happy to share a room? Triple rooms may not be easy to come by. You'll have to make enquiries for them. You might find a family room which would likely be a double with a single bed in there too, which might help.

Marni,
I'd give Tania and Stuart a try at http://www.blabheinn.scot/. We stayed there in October 2014. They only have two rooms but if they are both open might be a good fit. They are somewhat "mid" island but are great folks that are hikers and outdoor type persons. Might give them a look and mke an offer for both rooms, we had a blast out there. dave Bedford, Indiana usa

I probably stayed at a hostel - there are several and most have some rooms that sleep 5-6 people in bunk beds. Rick's book mentions some family rooms available at www.pinkguesthouse.co.uk.

My husband and I just returned from Scotland. For the Skye segment of our trip we stayed at the Dornie Hotel, which is not on the Isle of Skye but a 10-min drive from the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge and probably 20 minutes from the Glenelg ferry if you prefer to take that route. It's walking distance from Eilean Donan Castle. In one day, without rushing, we had time to drive to Dunvegan Castle and tour it, stop for gas in Broadford, drive back to Dornie and tour Eilean Donan Castle, and drive up to a scenic viewpoint above the town.

The cost for a double room was 80 pounds/night including a full cooked breakfast; it might be slightly more expensive in peak season.

We found it to be very comfortable, nothing fancy but a clean, well-kept older building. The staff were very pleasant and professional. Someone with a good eye for 20th-century art has chosen the paintings mounted on the walls. The hotel also has a full restaurant and pub, and we noticed that the pub scene picked up on a Saturday night -- but there was no excessive noise, in fact we didn't notice any noise at all in our room.
