My friend said her GPS got her within sight of the kelpies from the highway, but she couldn't find a way from the highway down to them. We want to stop there and get pictures, on our way from Edinburgh to Stirling Castle, but sounds like we won't be able to get there unless we can get more detailed directions. Can anyone help?

I've never visited The Kelpies but have heard it can be tricky finding them. I think it is a question of leaving the motorway at the correct junction (depending where you are coming from) and following the signs from there.
If you are driving from Edinburgh to Stirling then the directions you need are the first ones mentioned on the site......
"From Edinburgh - take the M9 towards Stirling, exit at Junction 5 for Falkirk/Grangemouth and then follow the brown tourism signs to Helix park and Kelpies"
Sownack's instructions are the best for getting there from Edinburgh.
The Kelpies are just after Junction 6 of the M9. From Stirling, take junction 6 and follow signs into Falkirk and then the brown tourist signs.
Junctions 5, 6 and 7 are limited access, there is no exit from the south at J6 or entrance to the M9 Edinburgh bound either. Do not stop on the M9 itself, this is illegal except in an emergency.
(This may not be at all relevant by the time you go, and it may also not be relevant if driving from Edinburgh.)
In April, the RS Scotland tour I was on stopped at the Kelpies on the way from Stirling back to Edinburgh. There were roadworks at a roundabout, and the road we wanted in order to get to the Kelpies had a big barrier across most of it. We had to take another road exit, drive to the next roundabout, and turn around. This took forever because, of course, traffic was backed up from the roundabout in all directions. However, our driver did manage to figure out how to come at the correct road in a different way (I have absolutely no idea how he managed that), and we were able to see the Kelpies up close after all.
I found a TripAdvisor review re the Kelpies from 2014 that also mentions roadworks in that area. Maybe one of the Scots here knows if there is a website where one can check on construction projects, roadworks, traffic, etc.
Trafficscotland.org, can't link.on this device. Search for roadworks, or look for the red triangle on the map with the man with the heavy umbrella.
http://trafficscotland.org/ is the link
see if use of this site and link provides the help you need. I used them for many hikes in the highlands and on skye. They are actually great help for hikes but if you familiarize yourself with the site and enter the info the correct way the site provides driving help as well, good luck!!
