My husband and I will be traveling to Edinburgh in April and will have 3 full days in the area. **First, how do you get up to Edinburgh Castle walking the easier route (Not the one with all stairs)… and are the 2 walking routes well marked?
Next, here’s our tentative plan for the 3 days:
1) first day go to Edinburgh Castle, St Gile’s, various things on Royal Mile and possibly Holyrood Palace. Is all of this doable in one day?
2) second day will be day trip to St Andrew’s
3) third day … Calton Hill, maybe Dean’s Village and anything else we should see in Edinburgh.
Any suggestions about “must-do” things or how much you can do each day would be much appreciated!
Yes, your first day is certainly doable; especially if you get an early start. The easiest way to the castle is just walking up the Royal Mile. Uphill, but no stairs. On day three (weather permitting), you might want to go strolling in the park along Princess Street.

If you don’t want to take the steps you follow the road up the Royal Mile.
As for well marked, you just aim for the massive castle on top of the massive extinct volcano. Getting lost would be quite an achievement in itself.
Great… we knew you can’t miss the castle on the hill but just wanted to make sure we are going the most efficient but easier route as we heads towards the castle.
where is you starting point to get to the castle from, there are more than 2 routes depending where you are starting from/
In addition to the Castle, the Royal Mile and St. Giles, we really liked Dean Village and the National Gallery.
Do go and find Greyfriar's Bobby and find the grave of his master. It's a lovely story...
We loved the Royal Botanic Gardens and the National Museum of Scotland.
