public transportation between Edinburgh and Anstruther

Has anyone had recent experience traveling from Edinburgh to Anstruther using train and or bus? If so, please share details about your trip. We fly into Edinburgh, and intend to stay a few days there, and then would like to visit the Fife coast area - especially Anstruther and St. Andrews for 2 or 3 days before returning to Edinburgh and onward to the Yorkshire Dales. Thanks in advance.

Take Stagecoach bus X60 towards St Andrews, it departs hourly for most of the day. There is really nothing complicated about it, as long as you make sure to take the X60 bus, there is also the route X59 to St Andrews but that route doesn't go via Anstruther.

I was on that bus a few weeks ago. They are long distance buses (coaches) with leather seats, on board toilet and wi-fi.

It should be painted bright yellow.

The other way to do the journey, if you don't want to be on the bus for 2 1/2 hours, is to take the hourly train from Edinburgh to Leven (a new railway station), then cross the road to the bus station. From there you have either the X60 or the local double deck service- the #95, so 2 buses an hour. Leven Bus Station is staffed from 6am to 10pm and also has toilets

Thank you to both Badger and isn31c, i do appreciate the information. That said, i, for the life of me, cannot get the Stagecoach website to function. When i enter any kind of input, there is zero response. Any idea what im doing wrong? Anyway, asking for your help again (since i get nothing from the website), two questions: does the X60 run also on Saturdays and Sundays, and, would i be seeking the X60 again when returning from Anstruther to Edinburgh? Many thanks for your help!

With the Stagecoach website it depends on your browser- it doesn't work on my laptop, but does on my tablet-

First thing- buy a East Scotland Day Rider from the driver for £11.50 in each direction, as a Single ticket is £18.40!!

The Day Rider is valid on all Stagecoach buses from Glasgow and Edinburgh through central Scotland and all the way through Dundee to Aberdeen.

Buses leave Edinburgh Bus Station hourly Monday to Saturday at 20 minute past each hour, on the 2 1/2 hour journey, so the 0720 (first of the day) arrives at 0947. Due to traffic the 1520 arrives at 1807 M-F, the 1620 (last of the day) is a change at Leven Bus Station and is an ordinary bus north of Leven.

Coming back to Edinburgh buses are at 0735, then 40 minutes past each hour to 1740, then 1855 and 2030 (the last 2 change at Leven).

On a Saturday the first bus from Edinburgh is at 0820 and the 1620 is a through service that day.

Later journeys are available Monday to Saturday changing from Edinburgh at Leven onto the 95 hourly until 2120- that last journey arrives at Anstruther at 0004.

On a Sunday buses terminate at Leven Bus Station where you change into the 95-
Anstruther depart 0658, 0808 then at 18 past each hour , Levens arrive at 7 past each hour, Leven depart at 0820, then 30 minutes past the hour to 1730, then X58A journeys at 1820, 1920 and 2020.
From Edinburgh the first bus is at 0920 then hourly to 2120, Leven depart 0650, 0750, then 35 minutes past each hour 0935 to 1735, then 20 minutes past each hour 1820 to 2320

The 0920, 1020, 1120, 2020 and 2120 from Edinburgh are numbered X58A
