Hi, my son and I will be staying in Inverness for a couple of days this summer. We were really hoping to make a couple of half-day trips out to Urqhart Castle and Clava cairns. We really want to be able to wander around and explore a little, rather than having to stick to the itinerary of a tour (we have some tours scheduled for Edinburgh). I see that there is regular bus service going both directions on the Scottish Citylink, but do we need bus tickets in advance? Or might we be able to get a taxi? Are taxis in and around Inverness reliable? I would really prefer not to have to try to rent a car if at all possible. Thanks!
To Culloden Battlefield you take the Citybus #27 hourly from Inverness Bus Station (heading for Inverness Airport). In the other direction it is heading for Strathpeffer.
It leaves from Stance 1 and takes 23 minutes.
As it is a citybus just pay the driver.
For Urquhart this service doubles as a long distance service to Fort William and a local stopping service. So many local people just turn up and pay the driver. That allows you to be flexible in your time there.
Jacobite Cruises also do Loch cruises to Urquhart from Dochgarroch with an option for included bus travel from Inverness Bus Station- https://www.jacobite.co.uk/tours
