Problems with Scotrail

A couple weeks ago when I started planning a trip to Scotland I was using Scotrail with no issues at all. However, for the last couple days it's basically frozen. I can get on the website (https://www.scotrail.co.uk) and get past "are you a robot". I can click "Buy Ticket", sometimes it will allow my to put my cities in, but I can't get any further. Sometimes, I click "buy ticket" and it doesn't go anywhere. I use Firefox. I tried Chrome and even tried to access with my husband's computer both on Firefox and Chrome, and nothing.

I've done a google search to see if others are currently having problems, and didn't get any hits.

Stuart recommended using Northern Rail, which I can use, but Scotrail will split tickets. I have no urgent need to use the website right now. Its too early for me to buy tickets, I'm just using train info for planning. It's just a curious situation, and I thought I'd report in case others are having problems.

The Scotrail timetable is changing this weekend so there might be some technical issues right now.

I can log into my account and plan journeys but the website interface has definitely changed this week, whether for the better or the worse is a matter of opinion, but quite a big interface change.
Currently a few days in I'm not a big fan, but it may grow on me.
I'm traveling all week, so am on my tablet, not my laptop. No idea if that makes a difference.
It looks as if I can proceed to purchase.

Maybe try clearing your cache?

I hope they have not quietly adopted 2 factor authentication without saying anything, but it isn't showing like that for me.

It was Northern which I suggested, as opposed to National Rail.

EDIT- it struck me this morning what that 1013 Scotrail train is from Fort William to Mallaig which we discussed it is 1013 (2213) at night, as opposed to 1013 in the morning.

I just tried the Scotrail website and the app. Both worked fine.

This is odd, when does it ask about being a robot because I can get all the way to adding my email address (after selecting cities, dates, times and actual trains) and don't see that - and I'm in Firefox.

When did you try this? you posted here at 03:34AM Scottish time which would be a good time for them to do server updates.

Jules, I too have been unable to access ScotRail for the last week or so. It stays “loading” after the robot check. I disabled the pop-up and cross-site tracking features to no avail. It lets me log in but I cannot see my booked journeys or book a ticket. In my particular case the work-around will be to buy our one remaining ticket for June 2 at a station as we arrive Scotland tomorrow.

I am computer semi-literate but this site worked like a charm in February and March.

@Crewe, I haven't been able to use the Scotrail website for at least three days. I know it was the website I'd been looking at a few weeks ago, and it was working fine. I've tried multiple browsers and computers. And sometimes, I do get to email/login, but doesn't go farther than that.
@Bob, I also know my way around a computer fairly well. While I am new to Scotland and ScotRail, I've traveled a lot and purchased many train tickets, some in advance on my home computer and some thru apps while I travel.
@Stuart, you are right, I knew I should have referred back to your message for the website, Northern, of course! Ah, ok, 10:13, I got that on Trainline, and I guess wasn't watching for am or pm.
@Frank, I guess you're lucky, I was thinking maybe the problem was just occurring for U.S. based users. Are you using Mac or PC?

I can use other sources for now, I don't need to buy tickets for at least a month. I just had been using the website for informational purposes.

Since it sounded like there were some interface changes I thought perhaps turning the computer off and on would work. It didn't. Just tried my ipad. When I touch buy ticket, a transparent overlay covers most of the website.

Has anyone been able to use this website in the last few days? I'd contact them, but I only see a phone number.

Scotrail - I can get as far as submitting my card details to make a purchase (Firefox on a Mac, based in UK)

You can contact them by web form here https://contact.scotrail.co.uk/srt_cr

It could be that your overseas IP address/internet provider is blocked from accessing the website.

Have you tried your phone app or website (assuming your phone is with a different internet provider than your computer).

I did a fare check on the website late last night with no problems, while standing on Carlisle station, using the station wifi.
As I watched the Brittanic Explorer luxury train leaving- the first time I've seen that train up close.
I have been checking several special rail forums and can find no mention of this being an issue.

I used Chrome on Android and the Scotrail Android app. No problems. I was also using a USA VPN.

Clear your cache. You could also try using it during normal business hours in Scotland and not in the middle of the night. They could be working on the servers especially since a new timetable was introduced today.

I have tried clearing cache. However, I know its not cache. I couldn't get tickets on my husband's desk top that he uses for finances and his business. He is very careful what he does on that computer and does not do much surfing on the internet.

I also have not been able to get the Scotrail site to work on my newer Chrome book. My daughter who lives in Minneapolis can't get the website to work on her Mac

I did try the app last night and it did work on my older iphone. I would like to NOT book all my tickets on my phone. I want to look at different time options

I can wait to book tickets, hopefully this gets worked out. I think Scotrail should know and I sent them a message. Thanks Ramblin.

Phone app? I used this solely for my recent 5 week travel around Scotland that I just returned from. It held my Senior's Railcard I had bought, so didn't need to keep adding it every booking I made, and I made many.

@Maria, yes, I have the app and it does work. I thought folks would appreciate knowing that it would seem U.S. based travelers are having difficulty with the website. It worked a few weeks ago and now it doesn't. I know its not me, its not my computer, and its not our internet provider. I've contacted Scotrail. If I need to, yes, I can use the app. But, my trip with my elderly mother is complex, and I much prefer seeing available time and route options on my PC vs. my 2.5 x 5 inch phone. I will likely purchase most of my train travel before I leave home, but I have a month before I need to.

I have used rail cards in the past, and I have an account with Scotrail (as well as LNER). Both the app and the website, should it work, have a way to retain the rail cards and an itinerary.

Update. I got a response from Scotrail. They say I should call web support (on my dime). I responded that we tried multiple browsers, computers and internet and cell providers and the website doesn't work. I also said others were having issues and didn't get a response. So I guess if people run into issues like Bob and I are having, send an email to Scotrail.

National and Northern seem to work just fine as alternatives. The only thing is that I believe when the user gets to the point of purchasing, they get transferred to Scotrail. Hopefully Scotrail will work at that point? And I also can use the app where I can actually do a ticket search.
