Private tour doesn't include admission. Should we buy admission tickects ahead of time?

We booked one private tour - to Stirling (and some other stops) and a whisky distillery. The admission tickets -- despite the hefty fees -- aren't included in the price. Oddly, I've emailed the operator twice now, inquiring if we need to book tickets in advance or would the driver "get us to the front of the line" as some other private tour operators do elsewhere, and then we'd pay. No news!

For anyone who previously booked a private tour of castles, etc., did you buy your tickets in advance? Or did your guide provide the entree to the ticket counter.

Thanks.

We did a couple of Rabbies tours a couple of weeks ago that we were required to pay the sites directly. A couple of them we bought tickets in advance, on one, Rabbies reserved our time slot in advance and then we paid when we got there, and another we showed up and paid.

Rabbies gave us a detailed description when we bought the tours of what would be expected of us at each stop. You will require a timed entry at Stirling so your tour company needs to tell you what time you'll get there.

Honestly, after two un-replied emails, I'd be looking for alternate operators.

are you sure that any reply didn't wind up in your spam folder?

Have you tried telephoning, during business hours?

We were just at Doune and Stirling castles last week (Tuesday) and although Doune was pretty relaxed as they had only re-opened the day before, Stirling was much busier. I couldn't tell if people were getting in without slots, but it was pretty busy for our 12n slot.
I was the planner of our four person trip and if one of our party hadn't felt strongly about Stirling, I would have skipped it.

I can say that Edinburgh Castle was a mess last Friday, although I understand the early mess is trivial compared to later in the day. We had pre-booked 9:30am slots (opening) and they were stating to the large group of slot-less people that 2pm was the first available opening and they'd better rush to the kiosks. We had joined Historic Environment Scotland for the trip and the tickets were free, so gambling on a specific time was zero added cost. As an aside, on our three week trip we saved over 1/2 on admissions with the membership, and Stirling and Edinburgh alone are almost breakeven.

If your selected operator has actually failed to reply, I'd look elsewhere. Expecting international visitors (assuming you are one) to "call", possibly facing voice messages, hold times, and "could you please hold" and the associated call costs rather than explaining the issues up front in a FAQ or replying to email is a blinking red light in my book, and I'd run the other way.

Well, second ping -- and a reply:

"Yeh you just pay any entry costs on the spot no need to book in advance"

I get the feeling I've overpaid. But now I know.
