An elderly friend and I will be on a Viking cruise around the British isles in April and all the excursions are booked in Edinburgh. Has anyone taken a private or small tour in the city recently they can recommend? And where did the tour begin? (Thinking of what transport we need from the ship.) Thanks for any help.

The transport from the ship depends on where you are berthing- Edinburgh has 4 cruise ports. Viking alternate between docking at Rosyth or anchoring off Newhaven for tenders.
From Rosyth, across the Forth from Edinburgh you need a taxi.
From Newhaven you have the option of the tram.
