We will be disembarking a Hurtigruten Hebrides trip at Fairlie about 9 in the morning, a port about an hour by train from central Glasgow. We need to be at the Ediburgh airport by 12:30. We know there is public transportatin but the stress of putting all the pieces together to make our flight out of Edinburgh on time has us considering a private car/taxi hire directly from the quay all the way to Edinburgh. Our scheduled flight is the only direct service to Copenhagen that day so changing to a later flight is not an option. Anyone have experience doing something similar in Scotland and have recommendations?
Did you check with Hurtigruten? Website says if they booked your flight, then transfer is included. If you booked your own flight, you might be able to purchase transfer through them.
There is a one-hour direct bus from Glasgow bus station to EDI: https://www.megabus.co.uk/route-guide/glasgow-edinburgh-airport/
Departs every 30 minutes.
I would be concerned about the ship's arrival being delayed. Have you considered staying an extra night in Scotland and flying to Copenhagen the next day?
The issue is that Fairlie is in Ayrshire. It's a two hour drive from there to Edinburgh Airport, assuming no issues, especially on the M8.
So you are already down to a sub par 90 minute check in.
Fairlie is an industrial deep water port in the main, a strange place for them to use. Greenock would have at least been a fighting chance.
It would be an hour, or close enough, just to Glasgow.
This sounds like a high stakes connection to me, where everything has to work like clockwork.
Stuart, I initially read this post as you appear to have read it: Flight is at 12:30. I think the flight is more like 2pm. OP says they need to be at the airport by 12:30, so I think it's not as tight as we thought.
Our CPH flight is a 15:10 departure so we hope the 12:30 arrival at the airport will give us enough time. But it is tight enough to make us nervous about using public transport, which would usually be our default.
Well that's a lot better then.
By public transport wouldn't really work IMO- Fairlie depart 1012 (earliest train you can make) Glasgow Central arrive 1112, Glasgow Queen Street depart 1145 EDI airport arrive 1303 by tram from Haymarket- leaves no slack in the schedule.
The Citylink (not Megabus) from Glasgow Buchanan at 1140 (leaves no room for the first train being a bit late) arrives at 1241 (M8 being willing) or 1200 at 1301 (so same time as the train). It's a megabus codeshare, but is now Citylink run.
And in Fairlie you would still need a taxi from quay to station, as the two are not that close to each other- around a mile apart, maybe a smidgeon less.
Ha! I read this as "Airport Faerie"! 🧚♀️
I think we could all use one of those- but it does seem more likely they might be in Scotland or Ireland...If you find one, let us know how it went
You could contact the Marina on [email protected] or 01475 568267 and see who they suggest using, as this must be a fairly common request by marina users.
