Princes Street, Edinburgh to re-open after the fire.

Princes Street, Edinburgh is CLOSED due to a major fire (now extinguished) in the former Debenhams Store, the building is now unstable.

Vehicles and pedestrians are diverted, including all bus services along Princes Street leading to delays and congestion.

Tram services are ONLY running between the Airport and West End. West End to Leith is not able to be served as there is no tram depot at Leith.

This will remain the case until further notice. The Airlink bus is running, on diversion via Queen Street.

UPDATE 27 AUGUST- Princes Street will re-open on Saturday 29 August, trams should resume their full route from start of service on Saturday (subject to testing of the line) and all bus services will resume their normal routes.

I passed through the city center yesterday by bus, the part of Princes Street that is closed is from Fredrick street (East side) to Castle Street (west side).Pedestrians are being diverted through Princes street gardens,so a very short but pleasant diversion.
Buses are being diverted up Fredirick Street ,along George street and down South Charlotte street back on to Princes street almost at the Junction of Lothian road and Shandwick Place.
The Bus detour I was on added at least 20 minutes on to my journey for this very short diversion , this was mid morning Friday and i reckon at busier times it may be longer.
Given that this has just happened hopefully the police and local authourities will try and organise better traffic managment if this closure goes on for longer than this weekend.

This makes me so sad. I hope Edinburgh doesn't start seeing some of the "spontaneous" fires that happen regularly in Glasgow (and I hope something is done about those as well!). Glad at least it sounds like no one was hurt.

Edinburgh Council have announced today that the road closure will continue until an undefined date in August, so into festival time.
Deep joy, not.
