Portree accommodations: self-catering pod or Rosedale hotel

Hi,

My husband and I are staying in Portree for 3 nights in Sep. I was not able to find a hotel in the center of town with parking for all three nights. My options are as follows:

  1. Stay in Rosedale Hotel for all three nights. There is no private parking and it seems we may have to park in the community center 10 mins away and walk from there.
  2. Stay in Gables B&B for 2 nights and switch over to Rosedale for the last night. Gables has free on-site parking (but is a mile or so away from town) but they don't have vacancy on all 3 three nights.
  3. Choose a self-catering "Skeabost View Pods" from Booking.com. This is 4 miles away from the center but has on-site parking for free and it's way cheaper than the previous 2 options.

We will be renting a car and want to go early in the morning to beat the crowds on some of these sights. Given that, I am leaning toward option #3 Skeabost View Pods. Rick Steves has not recommended it, but does ask us to check out airBnB. Does anyone have experience staying in this or such accommodations on Portree?

Would appreciate feedback/thoughts.

Thank you!

Hi Laila

I live in Skye and know the location of all three of your options, although obviously I haven't stayed in them as I live here. Portree is really a village (not a town) and very easily walkable.

  1. Rosedale. It's on the harbour and you're right there is no parking down there. While the community centre car park is free it is intended for locals using the community centre. A number of the spaces are explicitly reserved for the nursery school that shares the site. There is also some parking for local apartments. So while you might park there it wouldn't be a very community friendly thing to do. The better option would be to park in the large long stay car park at Bayfield Road. It has recently been extended to provide additional visitor parking spaces. While not free it is not expensive. From memory you can park there overnight for £5. Personally the Rosedale wouldn't be my choice. It's a steep walk down to the hotel and back up to the village. It's also a fairly busy spot, so not particularly relaxing.

  2. Gables B&B. This is no more than a 15 minute mainly level walk back into the village. The location is very good, with sea views and a much quieter spot than the Rosedale. The excellent Gasta at Skye Candles Visitor Centre is almost opposite. This is a very popular eatery serving excellent pizza from their wood fired oven. It's my go to lunch and dinner spot in Portree.

  3. Skeabost View Pods. These are much further out of Portree along a single track road with passing places. No sea view and quite an out of the way spot. It's a farming/crofting area where there are often cows (not highland ones) and sheep loose on the roads. It definitely would not be my chosen spot.

The Gables would allow you a quick departure for sightseeing each morning and I think a more relaxing ambiance. You could maybe more to the Rosedale for the last night, or choose one night elsewhere in Skye for your last night?

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you for the information. The challenge is the third night if I go with #2 above. Skeabost pods seems to have a minimum stay (not available for just one night), and I can't find anything else for just 1 night. I do see an option on AirBnB in Dunvagan here. Do you think that might work in terms of sights etc. if I keep Gables for 2 nights an?

Thanks again!

I stand corrected. I found accommodation for 1 night in Greenacres Guest House which is close to Gables B&B and can be convenient in moving for the last night. Turns out it was not available on Booking.com and going directly to their website helped.

Hi again Laila
It seems you are all sorted. Your second guest house is a few steps from your first! The pods you found near Dunvegan would also have been a lovely quiet location with good views and handy if you’d wanted to visit Dunvegan Castle, coral beach and Neist point. You’d have needed to drive into Dunvegan for food.
