Planes or Trains/Bus/Ferries

I am planning a trip in August with the Isle of Harris and city of Edinburgh being my main focus. One of my friends also strongly suggested that I not miss Inverness and he suggested taking trains/bus/ferries to the Western Isles versus flying. I am a photographer and will be hauling heavy equipment that will take up most of the weight and room in my luggage.

However, I have some very dear friends that live in the Southampton (England) area. I cannot imagine going to the UK without trying to see them. However, it seems very expensive and time-consuming to take trains or planes or bus to the south. Trains and "coach" are what my UK friends keep suggesting, but my research shows that they are almost as expensive as planes and more time consuming. But I am not sure. I have never been to the UK outside of the city of London. They say that I can find cheap tickets and that I will see more and be able to not worry about luggage as much. But then what about hauling luggage on "the tube"" in London? It seems all routes I would want to take from either Glasgow or Edinburgh require travel on the "tube." I would never travel in New York City with a lot of heavy stuff or luggage so the tube thing seems like it is not a viable option.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

PS....just to clarify...I would never travel on the subway in NYC with luggage that I had to struggle with.

Skip the Tube and take a taxi when you are moving luggage. It works for me.

There are trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Southampton that do not involve travelling across London, although they do require a change en-route, often on the same platform.

There are also flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Southampton Airport - maybe they could meet you there, although you will need to get to the Scottish airport somehow.

I recently flew from Edinburgh to London/Heathrow with another member of my family for under $100. We had taken the train from London up to Edinburgh which took about 4 hours and it was a great experience. We arrived at Edinburgh Airport 2 hours in advance and the flight to Heathrow took one hour. So the total savings in time was about an hour. I had carry on so it made it easy to get on and off the airplane. With the gear you are carrying, the train may provide a more relaxing journey. However, I am not sure where you will have to change trains to get to Southhampton. Hopefully it is just once, if at all, as that would provide its own challenges.

The change point could be a number of places (Doncaster, Stafford, Wolverhampton, York etc) - the one to avoid are where there is no alternative to Birmingham New Street.

Thanks for all your advice. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places but it seems that if I want to go to Glasgow or Edinburgh from Southampton/Eastleigh area that I have to change in London Euston which requires a trip on the tube. Maybe there are other ways but they might take many hours? I am using the Scotrail and RailEurope sites.

PS...I should mention that I am also looking into flying into Gatwick to start the vacation and then traveling north.

In my test of ScotRail from Glasgow to Southampton, it's typically suggesting a connection at Wolverhampton. You could also try www.nationalrail.co.uk, in case their format is easier to read. Trains are cheapest when booked a couple of months in advance. If you will also travel from the London area by train at the start of the trip, you might benefit from the flexibility of a BritRail Pass, such as $350 to cover your 4 longest days of train travel within a month. Flights within Europe also tend to be cheaper when booked ahead.

You may prefer taxi over public transport when carrying your luggage in a city. But do your best to pack light, so that luggage doesn't rule your decisions.

My husband and I took a train on Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 from London to Edinburgh via train that cost us total $148. We booked through Rail Europe and the train ride was about 4.5 hours long. We both were carrying a 50lb pack a piece and didn't have any trouble standing on the tube for the short ride to the train station. Once on the train to Edinburgh, there was plenty of room for our bags.

I prefer the virgin east coast site - it allows you to choose routes avoiding London

Once you're taken to the second page choose "select a route" and tick the box "Not valid for travel via London Terminals". Then, Update and it will show you options avoiding London.

Southampton to Edinburgh via York from about £50
