Place to stay in Skye or Portree? And suggestions for things to do?

Any suggestions for two families with teens in the Skye area? We are good with either hotels or B&Bs. And appreciate suggestions on an itinerary or suggestions on activities/tours/etc. for our time there. We plan to stay two nights before heading to Inverness. THANKS!

I don't have any specific hotel recommendations since I ended up booking at a hostel in Portree, but I will say to book asap. I am going in August and booked a couple of months ago. Even then, there was no availability at my top two or three B&B choices. I hope you find something!

We stayed on the mainland at the Dornie Hotel, a stone's throw from Eilean Donan Castle. It was excellent and affordable; their restaurant also serves good meals.

From Dornie we drove over the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge to the northwest coast of the Isle of Skye to tour Dunvegan Castle, which took about half a day. The second half of the same day we toured Eilean Donan Castle and drove up, up, up the mountain behind Dornie to a scenic overlook. If we'd had an additional day we might have liked to go on the Glenelg ferry and/or drive around the southern end of Skye. On Skye there are endless awesome places to walk/hike, provided you're dressed for the weather.

En route to Inverness, don't miss Urquhart Castle and the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition, both on the northern shore of Loch Ness. The two are very different from each other but both well worth a stop, and fun for teenagers I think.

About 12 years ago, my friends and I stayed at this B&B in Portree called Ben Tianavaig. It was run by an Australian gentleman and his family. They were quite nice and our stay was great. We didn't have reservations, but he fit us w/out issue.

Believe we stayed at the Coolin View when we were there. We got the last room on the top floor. It was fine and only a couple doors up from the Ben Tianaviag. We got lucky because the other B&Bs were full and we didn't have reservations.

I booked a room at the White Heather hotel ! It gets good reviews and it has a nice water / castle view. They have a web cam you can go to see the view. Hope this helps!

All the best, Monte

I stayed at the Skye Picture House. It was a good location for us as we were able to get around the island pretty easily. It's a bigger island than you think. If you don't want to stay in Portree this would be another option. The views were wonderful. It doesn't look like they offer dinner any more.
