We have a full day with a car available to drive from Pitlochry to the Isle of Skye. Studying a map it looks like we have a couple of options. Drive up to Inverness and go across the top of Loch Ness to Achnasheen and down into Skye. Smaller roads but perhaps it's scenic? Or would it be better to go straighter west across to Skye via Dahlwinnie, Spean Bridge, Eilean Donan Castle? (These are not places particularly to stop at but they are on our map!)
Our goal is to have a nice day driving and see beautiful scenery. Guessing this is a 5 hour drive plus numerous stops along the way. Thoughts? Is there anything special along either of these routes we should be sure to not miss?
This is a journey I make often as I live on Skye and have to travel to Dunblane frequently. By far the better route of those you have identified is the Dalwhinnie, Spean Bridge route. It is the most direct route and has some lovely scenery.
I would not go up to Inverness and across. You are adding miles and the scenery is no better than the other route.
You are right to allow about 5 hours as there are plenty of places to stop off and admire the scenery. A wonderful detour would be to visit the ice age landscape of Glen Roy
Best wishes

Thank you! I appreciate your advice. Now researching Glen Roy. Looks like beautiful views!
The parrallel roads of Glen Roy are famous among geologists and geographers. They are the remains of shore lines of glacial lakes formed as the ice melted after the last ice age.
