I realize Balmoral Castle is not open to tourists then but can you see the castle from the road? Is there anything to see of the castle or estate?

The only part of the castle which you can see from the A93 is the tower and there are police signs warning you not to stop and risk causing an accident. The river Dee is between the road and the castle and there are lots of trees all along the bank. A glimpse of the tower is really all you get.
I don't know when in September you plan to do this trip but it may be that later on in the month the castle grounds will be open to the public as they were last year. It seems the king is not going to spend as much time at Balmoral as his parents did. I'd keep an eye on the Balmoral website for more information if you are interested in a quick visit. The grounds were free to enter but you did need to pay to park at the Crathie car park.
