Pitlochry or Dunkeld Overnight?

Hi Guys. Finalizing our itinerary for our August trip and trying to decide staying one night either in Pitlochry or Dunkeld. I've read RS book on both and Pitlochry could be a bit touristy and Dunkeld a small quiet village. We are planning on spending some time at the Scottish Crannog Centre on the banks of Loch Tay which is close to Pitlochry. Considering the Craigroyson House in Pitlochry or several places in Dunkeld.

Opinions?

Given a straight choice with equal cost I would choose Dunkeld, no contest.

We stayed at the Dunkeld House Hotel on the RS tour. It was really nice and the food was very good. It’s in a beautiful park like setting.

We also stayed at Dunkeld House Hotel on a RS tour in 2022. The best hotel on the tour. We really enjoyed walking through The Hermitage (nearby) to the waterfall. I would pick Dunkeld.

In 2022 we stayed across the river from Dunkeld at Birham Hotel. If you run out of choices this close to your travel date, it is "acceptable" BUT it was obviously once a grand hotel, but our room had water leak discoloration on the high ceiling, and the service felt like we were in Faulty Towers. The front desk was curt and the breakfast worker could be a Basil clone. We entered the dinning room through the obvious open door, and he berated us for not using the grand entrance. Rude to the point of being hilarious.

Enjoyed the river walk on the Birnham side of the river through the ancient oaks as welll as The Hermitage. The Crannog Centre was closed due to a recent fire. There's also a Chocolatier close by.
