This is sad news . I had visited several years ago , the focus of the museum and the stories of Glasgow' s working class were of great importance in understanding the city . Another blow coming on the heels of the art school tragedy .

The linked article suggests that there is some hope the People's Palace may be able to reopen after not too long a closure. The gardens seem like a tougher challenge. Is there perhaps an issue with the glass roof?

I'm very upset to learn this, as the People's Palace was a real highlight of Glasgow for me. In particular, it added a lot to my Tenement Museum visit, to see the contrast between the poorer living situations many had (one or two rooms for a whole family), and the relative "luxury" in the Tenement Museum (four rooms for first two people, then just one person; ensuite toilet and bathtub; hot and cold running water).

There were repairs going on in the Winter Garden when I was there, so I only peek in, not go inside.

Yes, the article says "We are currently working on options to allow the People’s Palace to remain open independently of the gardens." Let's hope they find a way!

From additional reports, it appears that the problems lie with the glass enclosure to the Winter Gardens, as acraven suspected. Unfortunately, the fire escape for the People's Palace is accessed through the Winter Gardens, which is why both sections of the building will be closed for repair.

So far, almost 8,000 Glaswegians have signed a petition to keep the Palace open.
