Your best bet is to go to a manned station.

Though, if the pump has been upgraded to tap-to-pay, then you should be able to get up to 100 GBP in fuel.

If your only option is to insert your cad, that will be an issue without a card that does PIN transactions

I rented a car back in 2023 and had it for almost 2 weeks, and never had a problem finding unmanned stations, even on a few remote islands.

Yes, there are very few fuel stations that do not have staff. In the Highlands and Islands they are often attached to a local shop.

Best thing to do is make sure you fill up regularly, don't let it get more than half empty as there can be significant distances between them.

A little spanner in the works for me.crewe's good point, the Highlands and Islands are one of the areas where there is a reduced duty rate on petrol and diesel, 5p lower duty so 6p lower per litre than it would otherwise be. Today Oban is cheaper than the area around Glasgow Airport! However, their point is well made you cannot guarantee that will be in your favour.

Motorway filling stations are best avoided if you can. The nearest one to Glasgow has an almost 30p per litre difference to the stations in the nearest town, that is £18 on a 60 litre tank. You could pop to the nearby town, fill up at the supermarket, go to the McDonald's and still have change. The saving on the motorway is time or having to fill up at 3 AM or on Christmas Day.

I’ve had mixed luck at unmanned stations in Europe so generally go to a manned station. If the card doesn’t work at the pump, I just walk inside and it works every time.

Some unmanned pay at pump stations will only accept domestic cards. So it is worth while unless it says otherwise considering all pay at pump card reader are domestic cards only.

From what I'm getting, most gas stations have a way to pay inside vs. the pump in Scotland...don't fill up on the highway...keep your tank above the halfway point...and grocery store gas stations are usually the cheapest. So, basically, I should be fine?

Waitrose is rare north of the border; their Shell stations don't often have low prices.

There are 3 Costcos in Scotland, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, all have petrol station forecourts, all require membership, all have very good prices if you are nearby.

You should be fine. For the ones on 'the highway' we are specifically regarding the ones on the motorways, the blue signed roads with an M number (M8, M74, A74(M), M90, M9, M80). Services on the green and white signed roads will be cheaper generally.

I've never seen a petrol station with no staff.

I had to Google and there are a few in Scotland. Google lists unmanned sites at Applecross, Luss, Newcastleton and Airdrie.

It's seven or eight years since I've owned a car (don't need one in London) and longer since I was driving regularly in Scotland. Maybe other people have seen more? It's definitely not a common thing, like it is in Italy for instance.

I don’t know in detail how many unmanned petrol stations there are these days as we have had an electric car for several years now, but the Tesco that opened up locally to me maybe 5/6 years ago has one.

It is a bit south of the border but my local Asda forecourt is completely unattended, only works with a tap of a card on a display on the pump - I use Apple Pay . The main store is probably 200m away. It was attended for 2 of the 4 lanes until the woman in the booth kept being harassed by local yobbos and ASDA took her into the main store and pulled the shutter down. Even so they are one of the cleanest and there are always diesel gloves on every island.

The nearby Tesco has 2 lanes with pay inside as an option, all the other 7 lanes are pay at the pump only.

The Tesco in Stirling is pay at pump only, with the building closed. The rest of the supermarket is open but a few hundred metres away.

Nigel, I checked to see if the Asda that I used to use in Blantyre had gone over to unstaffed. It seems it hasn't. It's now 24 hours too.

I do indeed need to get out of the big smoke more often. I still have a hankering for a car, but it's hard to justify the cost just for the occasional run to the tip or to go and browse Homebase or Ikea at the weekend.

I don't think the OP needs to worry unnecessarily about being stuck. I think the vast majority are staffed still. There's usually at least one 24 hour staffed garage anywhere with a population of any reasonable size too. Same as the US, it's where people go if they need a late night pint of milk / packet of crisps / packet of Rizla.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious here, in the UK we say petrol and/or diesel not gas. In the UK gas is something completely different:-)

People will understand if you, for example, ask for directions to a gas station but if you ask where you can buy gas you might be directed to where you can buy gas canisters which is not want you want.
It’s unlikely but possible…..

If going to a Costco station your Costco Citi card should work; at least mine did when we went to one in Spain.

Meal Deal

Have all the Tescos brought in a 2 tier Meal Deal, more expensive and yet even more expensive? Or is it just my Tesco? Same price or more than a Waitrose Meal Deal. And less variety.

I believe so. Ours has, as has ASDA, and Sainsbury's locally.

Though I have discovered I do like the Waitrose scotch egg sandwich they are currently promoting if I am passing one of the few local Waitroses!

Particularly good in a wrap with a bit of mayo or coleslaw.
For extra crunch add some crisps. Delicious!

lots of good information about gas purchasing...does anyone use the Shell or Chevron Application on smart phone? I was hoping that would be an option on my upcoming drive around the UK.

I don't use either app - just to mention that Shell tends to be one of the most expensive places, and I don't know what good a Chevron app would do unless they show all the competition - Chevron has no presence in the UK.

Here in the Highlands and Islands it is very rare to come across a Shell or Chevron garage. What we do benefit from though is the Scottish Government subsidy for rural areas, so you will generally find petrol/diesel here in Skye roughly the same price as the big supermarkets in Inverness. We do have one supermarket station here (Asda in Broadford) but it is usually more expensive than the locally run stations in Portree and Dunvegan. I don't know of any unmanned petrol stations in Skye. We are very old school!

Chevron don't operate in the UK under that name, I think they are Texaco but that is also a rare brand.

Your app could work, but apps and loyalty cards are often different between countries even if the brand name is the same.

We were at Hadrians wall a couple of weeks ago. Great stop . Make sure you see the Roman museum. I would also recommend The Beamish Museum. Its close by and a great stop. We stayed at the Beamish Hotel. One of the best on our trip. As for gas. We spent 10 days driving Aberdeen Inverness Stirling and Edinburgh. No problems finding gas or paying by CC.Enjoy your trip.
