parking apps

Hello!
We will try to carry coins for parking, but there are a couple parking apps that apparently are great for Scotand: RingGo and PyByPhone Parking. Does anyone use these and are they dandy to have - especially to use in the Highlands and Skye? Thanks!

I don’t know about in the High.ands and Skye, but these are the standard parking apps used in London and everywhere I’ve been in the rest of the UK. Both are easy to download and to use, but I suggest you download them on Wi-Fi before you need them so there’s no hassle in getting set up when all you want to do is pay and get on with your visit.

I saw car parks using RingGo a lot in Scotland. I signed up for it in advance. I had some problems with setting up the account, though, as the verification sent to my phone never worked. I tried it with 001, +1 and without a country code and got nothing. I finally contacted them through Facebook messenger and they helped me out, and it started working fine.

The parking machines we came across in Scotland accepted both coins or contactless payment. The exception was Stirling where they only accepted coins. I’m not sure an app is really needed.

An app has an advantage in that you can extend the parking time if needed. There were a couple of times I was parked and my time started to run out before I was finished, so I just added another 15 minutes using the app. Very easy.

We used Ringo for parking 3 times. Easy, but you may need a cellular signal. The first time we used it the sign said we had 72 hours to pay, presumably because cellular coverage st this park might not have been good. One other time we just used a credit car.

We are just back from Scotland and never used coins. I downloaded the RingGo app in St. Andrews because others in front of us had trouble getting the receipts required to post on the car dashboard out of the machine. I had purchased a pay as you go SIM card from EE in Edinburgh at the start of the trip, which turned out to be a significant advantage throughout our travels. If you are used to using parking apps, it is more convenient than the other methods. If a parking lot used some other system, we simply tapped a credit/debit card. We did not encounter any parking areas that required coins only.
