Orkney Tour

I am staying in Thurso for a week in early June. I toured Orkey by bus-1/2 day tour- a few years back and loved it. Only tour that I have been on that was worth the money I spent. Now, I would like to do a full day tour. I might be able to swing 1 night, even though I will have to be double-dipping, so to speak. Paying for two places to stay the same night. I am looking for a tour that will take one or two days. I can drive over, I will have a rental, or I can take the ferry as a passenger, and the guide pick me up or I pick up the guide. I would prefer to take the ferry and meet the guide on Orkney. Any suggestions on a one or two day tour would be appreciated. I am handicapped a bit and use a scooter, so this needs to be factored in somewhat. There would be two of us.

I see no one's answered yet so I'm just sort of bumping up your post (sorry but I haven't been to Orkney myself). Could you phrase your question more cleary? It's not entirely clear what you're asking, at least to me.

Here's a link to tours and guides for Orkney. Also, at the bottom of this page is an email address for the tourist office. You might email them. Or you could email the Orkney Tour Guide's Association here.

I think I would start with the TI and see what they recommend. They will surely know of guides that can work with you.

I was looking for a guide for 1 or 2 days to tour Orkney Islands. Or, I was asking should I just take the bus tour.

Hi John, I was suggesting you ask for some recommendations from the tourist board. The guides are usually certified. There are a lot of things to see and visit on Orkney--on the Mainland and on South Ronaldsay or over to Hoy.

Wife and I to be on Orkney briefly in late September. Early inquiries about a tour indicated very high costs if we booked a half-day or full-day for just two of us. Are there any tours that are groups which would lessen the cost?

The best thing is look at the links Pam provided. Remember the costs will be linked to the fact that Orkney is remote with a shorter season so supply and demand come into it.

John, Look into a renting a car and doing it yourself. The advantage of Orkney is that there won't be a lot of traffic and you can map out an itinerary for yourself, the sites have wonderful guidebooks and lots of interpretations.
