Orkney Islands - Roads Status Updates- New Facebook page

Orkney Islands Council have started a dedicated Facebook page this week for updates to the status of roads in the Isles- https://www.facebook.com/OICRoads

The primary reason for this is the increasingly frequent weather related closures on the fixed links to the South Isles (otherwise known as the Churchill Barriers). These closures are due to waves breaking over the barriers, which have damaged vehicles, including a School Bus in October 2025. They are hard to predict, and can be a great surprise, so the closures are a vital safety measure.
These notices are overwhelming the general Council facebook page.

Closures or disruptions throughout the isles due to roadworks, snow or other weather events will also be reported on this page, which should therefore be bookmarked by anyone driving in the Isles.

Is this a year-round thing or just in the winter?

It's way more likely to happen in the winter, but summer storms can and do blow in. So worth checking the page at any time of the year if a storm is arriving.

Maybe something also to bear in mind if travelling over with Pentland Ferries to St Margaret Hope- the small chance of not being able to reach Kirkwall- taking us back to before the barriers when the islands were linked by little ferries.

As Stuart indicates it can happen in summer but even last summer when there were gale force wind warnings up for the western side of the island the barriers were open and the waves were not crashing over. I HAVE seen the recent photos of the waves coming over the top of Barrier 2 which may be the one that is the most problematic.

I spent 13 nights on Orkney in 2025 and 9 nights in 2023 and there was never an issue with us getting from our hotel in Burray (need to cross 3 barriers to reach there) to Kirkwall or beyond.

The 4th barrier was in sight of my hotel window. It's a bit different because sand has filled in on the Eastern side so it's not as exposed from both directions as the others are.
