Orkney ancient site to be reburied later this year

20 years ago, the Ness of Brodgar archaeological site was uncovered, revealing an ancient city on Orkney. But it will be reburied this year to protect it. The article says that it is a UNESCO site but the site is degrading so they want to protect it for the future, when there might be better technology to investigate more. So if you’re going to Orkney this year, you might want to check into this as I believe the reburial will take place later this year.

This is so interesting. I was there last year, and there was no suggestion of burying it, at least that I heard. It seemed like a very ambitious project. Well, good for them to make such a responsible decision.

I agree, Carroll, even though it means I probably won’t ever see it. But the greater good, right?

Carroll, I think it has always been in the plans to have 2024 as the last "dig" year. When I was there in mid-August I just missed it by a few days as they were shutting it up for winter using big sheets of black plastic and tires. We drove by it a number of times as it is on the road between the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar. The director of the dig has bought a house right on the property.

They have about 20 years of processing to do on the artifacts they've excavated from the site!

Thanks for the article, Mardee!!

Pam, aren’t you going there this year later on? I wonder if you’ll get a chance to see it then before they cover it up.

No, I’m not going back until 2025! I’m adding in some time in Edinburgh and wondering if perhaps any of the artifacts will have wound up at the National Museum there.
