My son and I are going to Scotland for a wedding. Arrive in Edinburgh at 9 am on Monday just bringing carry on back packs figured we could see one or two things in Edinburgh before heading to Peebles for the wedding. Only in Scotland for three days and 2 are dedicated to wedding. Probably going to see castle but not sure if a 4 yo will like it any thoughts appreciated.
I would say yes to the castle. I hate for this to sound gender specific, but (judging from my 5 and 3-year old great nephew's interests) there are soldiers and cannons, lol if this is a boy child. I'd skip going into most of the buildings but walking around a real fortified castle is pretty cool. A gun fires at 1PM daily.
Are you going soon? The official website says the tickets sell out at times so I'd check on this.
It'll be heaving because the festival is on (if you mean this Monday).
Just soak up the atmosphere in the Royal Mile and Princes St Gardens. There will be lots of street performers to keep you entertained. I wouldn't be going into any pub with a four-year-old. There will be pipers/buskers on the Royal Mile.
as has been said the Edinburgh Festival and Fridge is on, lots of street entertainer and there may be some shows on during the day suitable for young children. https://www.edfringe.com/experience/how-to-plan/visiting so have a look at the programme and see if anything suits. I was going to suggest the Museum of Childhood on the Royal mile but looking at the website it will be closed on Monday . https://www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/venue/museum-childhood
There is always Craigmillar Castle which is about 15 minute bus ride from the centre of Edinburgh. It is a ruin and has lots of space for the 4 year old to run and explore.
Thanks for the input. I am looking into Craigmillar Castle, and hitting the royal mile and armoury definitely will work. Also looked at the 3 bridges boat tour to see puffin and seals though I think the puffin will be gone. We arrive Monday September 9.
The puffins will be long gone. I would wait until the day to book the boat trip when you know what the weather is doing and whether your flight has arrived on time. There is a 1pm and a 3pm sailing that day.
There is also a cruise ship anchored off South Queensferry to see as well that day as an added attraction- the Regal Princess
