One-night getaways from Edinburgh

Hello,
I will be in Edinburgh for a weekend, and I have one spare night. What would be some nice getaways for a night from Edinburgh, preferably north? I've come across "1 day Highland" tours but I think (1) it'd be too rushed and it'll basically be one long bus ride, and (2) I prefer travelling individually and live in England (so I'm in not much of a hurry to see everything in one go).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

P.S: I've been to Edinburgh before and have extensively travelled the city (thanks, in part, to Rick's meticulous notes!).

Guessing you prefer not to rent a car for one day, is that right? Do you have a preference between places on the rail line vs. those you can reach by bus?

Look at Kelso or Jedburgh in the Borders. Less than an hour by train from Waverly. Really pretty countryside...beautiful villages...
wonderful abbey ruins. Under the main tourist radar

Being pedantic... The train takes you to Tweedbank, between Galashiels and Melrose. You would than have to get a bus to Jedburgh or Kelso. Actually Melrose is a lovely small town with a ruined abbey.
