We have 8 hours in newcastle and wanted suggestions as to how to get around and what highlights to see in Newcastle - particularly from getting a locals perspective
Two suggestions:
Google Newcastle-upon-Tyne things to do
Ask your question on Cruise Critic
lots of info here:

We were delightfully surprised by Newcastle when we stayed there overnight after our flight from the US and on our way to Hadrian's Wall. There is a nice walk along the river.
However, If I had 8 hours, I would contact Peter Carney immediately. http://www.hadrianswall-walk.com/
See if he can booked this day. You won't regret it! He will pick you up, take you sights of interest along Hadrian's Wall and provide an extremely interesting commentary. He can customize the day to meet your interests and time schedule.
Both my sister and I felt the introductory day with spent with Mr. Carney was money well spent and we learned a great deal about the wall and Roman history before we started our walks.
I second Carol’s recommendation to book Peter Carney for a Hadrian’s Wall Tour. He is such a lovely man and so knowledable about the Roman history of the area. If you know little about Hadrian’s Wall now, you will be amazed about it by the time Peter is finished with you. I also took a day trip with Newcastle City Tours that was OK, although the destinations were stunning: Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, and Holy Island (for lunch). While it was great to have transport to those destinations, that tour was really a very nice taxi driver taking us from place to place. It really doesn’t compete with spending a day with Peter Carney and seeing Hadrian’s Wall and other Roman Britain sites of the area.
