Same suggestions here as for your Newcastle-upon-Tyne post
Orkney is best known for the Neolithic sites--Scara Brae, Stones of Steness, Ring of Brogdar, Maeshowe, and the Ness at Brogdar. Then there are sites from the Viking times--the runes in Maeshowe, the Earl's Palace at Birsay, the Bishop's and Earl's Palace in Kirkwall, St. Magnus Cathedral. Then there are some more recent sites--the Churchill Barriers, the Italian Chapel, Highland Park Distillery, and all the jewelry designers! Most people want to see the Neolithic sites and while several are concentrated in one area, you should try for a tour, or a guide as that will get you to the most places.
