We will be traveling from Oban to Iona for the day on September 30. What is the best option for travel to and from? As a rookie traveler I am a bit overwhelmed.
Will you have a rental car or will you prefer public transportation?
From Oban you take the ferry to Craignure on the island of Mull. Then drive or take the bus across the island to Fionnphort. Then you take the foot ferry to Iona.
If you have a rental car and want to drive between Craignure and Fionnphort, reserve the ferry from Oban to Craignure for both your car and yourselves with Calmac Ferries.
If you want to take the public bus, take the ferry to Craignure. From there you will take the bus to Fionnphort. Here is post from earlier today that explains how to travel by public transportation. Read the first response.
Another option is to take the West Coast Tours 2 Island tour to Mull and Iona. The tour price includes both ferries and the bus round trip. You will have commentary on the drive across Mull. Sit upstairs on the bus and you'll have wonderful views. The tour gives you about 2 hours non Iona.
A few years back we took the Three Isles Tour. To me the visit to Fingals cave was the high point of the tour.
Either tour will be easy; you just arrive at the harbour office and follow advice.
