Oban or Mull

We plan to drive from Glasgow to Oban, sightsee the afternoon, stay the night, then catch the ferry to Mull in the morning,10am ish.
Can't decide if we should stay the night on Mull, or go back to Oban for the night before heading north to Skye.
Thanks for any experienced input.

Hi Tom, I do not know your travel style, or what accommodations are available on Mull, but we absolutely loved this bed and breakfast in Oban for our two-night stay there. The views over the harbour are beautiful, and the breakfast is wonderful. And the bathrooms, with a huge modern shower, are amazing.

That’s a tough call. We spent 3 nights in Oban, but took the 3 island tour to Mull, Iona and Staffa and I remember being so enchanted with Mull, I would like to go back someday to spend more time. However, that said, we really liked the vibe of Oban too.
I would say that Oban has more of a working class city vibe, and Mull is a quiet, beautiful island. Just fyi, Genesis the rock band apparently liked Mull as they owned a house there for awhile where they would get together and write music.

Thank you Cynthia, that is great advise, but we plan to go through Glencoe, Fort William, Glefinnan and catch the ferry at Mallaig.
Hope someone else can offer some experienced insight.
Thanks, Tom

Thanks, diveloonie! We're planning a trip to stay in Oban next May, so this info helps others following the Scotland threads.

Depends on what you're looking for in the evening. Mull will be peaceful, serene, laid back, with little to no evening time things to see and do. Oban has a lot to do and see in the evening, and way more places to eat. Two totally different vibes so just follow your gut about how you want to spend the evening.

Thanks everone!
diveloonie your info was good and appreciated. I think perhaps I asked the question incorrectly.
I was just wondering if a day trip to Mull was doable or if it would feel too rushed and we would wish we had stayed the night and ferried back to Oban in the morning?
Thanks

Definitely doable. A bit of a long day, but not really rushed.

Hi, uncltom56,

Spend the night on Mull. By the time that you get back to Craignure for the ferry, you're going to regret that you are going back to the mainland. There is a good amount of decent accommodation in Tobermory, and several restaurants (reservations advised in high season). There is also the best fish and chips in the Inner and Outer Hebrides at the van by Tobermory Harbour. However, if you choose to eat there, beware of divebombing seagulls!

Best wishes,

Mike (Auchterless)
