Oban or Fort William or Mallaig? Hotel ideas?

Hi.

I think we are going to do an overnight in either Oban or Fort William to get a tiny taste of the Scottish Highlands. Any recommendations on the best drive from Edinburgh? My husband wants to see Douane Castle so south is probably better, but I am interested to hear ideas.

I assume you mean Doune Castle just north of Stirling? Either would work from there. Where are you planning to go after, as that could influence the decision.

There aren't that many roads throught eh highlands, so you don't have a great choice of routes... From Doune, take the A85 to Oban via Crianlarich. For Fort William pick up the A82 to Fort William.

Both are scenic drives from Doune. Oban may be a more attractive place to stay than Fort William, although you could also consider Glencoe, oalthough there is less choice of accommodation there.

I would also suggest that Fort William (the town itself) is more functional than charming. It has good transportation links, some nice B&B options and wonderful surrounding beauty (nearby Glencoe etc.), and it would be fine for an overnight. A car would give you lots of scenery and flexibility for stops along the way. I have not been to Oban so I'm no help there.

If you choose to stay in Fort William, we loved Ben Nevis Guest House just on the outskirts of Fort William, that would be worth checking out.

Whatever choose it'll be great, Scotland is the best.
