We will be in Oban in mid-September 2026 and with a car so could drive out of town a little way for a more authentic pub night with music and dancing. Is the ceilidh at The View an "authentic" experience or a "touristy" version thereof? If it's more "tourist" than "true" which pubs in Oban area would provide a more traditional experience? If we do attend the ceilidh at The View should we have dinner at The View prior or eat elsewhere? Mòran taing!
This is our experience in early June of 2022 and may not reflect what it's like today. My specific experience might have been influenced by a bloody arm injury from earlier in the day (I couldn't "swing your partner" in one direction).
There was a three piece band (drumset, bagpipes, and accordian) and a total of six paid admissions (us four and another couple) in a room large enough for 75 people and a dance floor. Although the band was okay, there were only a few paying customers until they (apparently) opened the doors to the locals. We were practically the only table willing to brave the dance floor to be taught what were essentially Appalachian square dances (although I realize they're closely related). It was quite invigorating (tiring) and I had to pass on any dances that involved the right elbow, rather than gross strangers out.
The band tried, but there just wasn't much energy to extract from such a small group, most of whom weren't paying any attention.
My overall impression was that it was an expensive tourist event that we enjoyed less than just sitting at Markie Dan's listening to music. I can imagine a large crowd of interested people would make a world of difference.
