Oban

Driving from Glasgow to Oban and taking all day to do it.
Once there, we plan to do the public transit for Mull, Iona and Staffa (the next day).
Sounds doable, but tight for a day.
So arrive Oban for two nights...or...……………stay a third night and see Oban and other sites?
Oban will be nights 7 and 8 of a 17 night trip, planned around RS clockwise 14 day car in the Scotland book.
Thoughts and input?

Thank you and Merry Christmas!!

When you say by public transport I am assuming you mean the three island tour offered by West Coast Tours. This was a great day trip and so worth it. It will be a long day and you won’t have a great deal of time to explore anything else on the two night model. I’d add a third night for seeing Oban area and giving yourself a semi-rest Day afterwards.

We did a day trip to Oban (by train from Tyndrum), and we had quite a bit of time to kill waiting for the train back. A tour of the distillery, and walking around, with a stop by the chocolate shop, was good for us. It was a beautiful day to hang out by the water, but I'm not sure a full day is necessary.

Are you interested in ancient megalithic sites? If so visit Kilmartin Glen. We drove there as a day trip from Oban last year. Wonderful free standing stones, groups of stones, burial mounds, all in a beautiful rural valley setting. Less than an hour south of Oban. Or about 2 hours from Glasgow if you took an alternate route. One of the most beautiful, thought provoking, non tourist ancient sites in Scotland.

You didn't ask for lodging recommendations, but we loved this B and B in Oban:

Beautiful view of the harbor from the room, an amazing bathroom, great breakfast. Well worth a splurge.

Lodging on and near the islands for next summer is very picked-over already. You have a big advantage over me; since you're driving, you don't have to stay right in Oban. Still, I suggest you get something nailed down soon unless you are traveling way off-season.
