NY Times Viking Scotland Article

There is an article on "Viking Scotland" in the NY Times today. The author is investigating the nordic roots of Scotland. While the article hits some of the high points, I was a bit disappointed. I guess I wanted more depth from the NY Times. There is a reference to the Orcadian Sagas, but she doesn't tie it into the Icelandic Sagas. They land in St. Margaret's Hope and don't explain the connection to Scandinavia? It just feels full of missed opportunities. Maybe I just want more history and to balance all the food references.

Don't get me wrong, she offers some wonderful places to visit, but there wasn't much new here in my mind. What do you think?

I'm with you, Pam. I would have hoped this article would provide some interesting information on Scotland's Nordic heritage or great places to visit. I found little of either. The article just seemed to gloss over a lot of things.

And, come to think of it, how can you have an article on Scandinavian Scotland and not talk about the Western Isles? I'll just have to appreciate this moment of feeling superior to a NY Times contributor. I'm going to bet that she is freelance.

A letter to the NY Times about it would be a good idea.

Norma,

I did comment on the article and I see that it posted over night. At least one other person had some similar comments. Some dispute her points about the Scandinavian influence on the current referendum, but no matter whether or not the comparison's were valid, it was certainly covered in the media!

I did some research on the reporter and her background is actually as a food writer so no wonder the focus was there.

I saw the article and I also found it a bit disappointing. If you are going to write a travel article about Viking Scotland, it seems odd to spend so much time talking about Viking Scotland being a marketing ploy. If you want to write a news article about how Scotland uses the Viking link to attract tourists, fine. But a travel article ought to be (in my opinion), why you would want to travel to a particular place and what you will see and experience there. The article seems to be a snarky take on the Viking link. I think it would have better if it had had more about the link and less on how the Viking label sells.
