Nice overnight stop between Portree and Edinburgh?

In late Sept. we'll be leaving Skye on a Sunday, then have one day to stay somewhere on Monday before driving back to an Edinburgh airport hotel on Tuesday afternoon. So we'll have two half days to spend somewhere. We really like nice leisurely walks (1 - 3 hrs., no major hikes), gorgeous countryside, old buildings, charming villages, you know - the usual! We don't mind somewhere off the beaten track as long as there's a nice pub nearby. Any suggestions?

Taking a stop somewhere around the Inverness area would be good. There is the town of Inverness itself, but also some smaller places like Nairn. Keep searching this forum and you will find great suggestions!

We enjoyed staying in Nairn, a few miles east of Inverness. Walking through the streets of Nairn to the marina and beach was relaxing and scenic, though I wouldn't say it is earth-shakingly lovely. Nairn is very near Cawdor Castle, where you can walk around the grounds for free and/or take a tour inside. A good place for a substantial walk is Culloden Battlefield, just a little further from Nairn in the direction of Inverness. We didn't go to see Clava Cairns, but that's another interesting outdoor destination in the area.

In Nairn I can recommend Tali Ayer B&B and the restaurant called The Classroom for dinner.
