There have been a number of posts on the forum recently about visiting the Outer Hebrides- especially Lewis and Harris.
For information Stornoway has now opened a new Deep Water Terminal, where the large cruise ships can now berth alongside. Most have had to tender in before now, creating limitations.
It has been built primarily as a freight ferry berth (enabling larger vessels to be used- a great need), for general industrial use and for the Arnish fabrication yard for transport of large components for renewable energy developments, with the cruise industry as an important side benefit- it is able to handle vessels up to 360 metres long.
The berth is 2 miles out of town, but a pedestrian link to the Castle Grounds has been built to allow cruise visitors to walk/cycle into town.
This is very important for the economy of the Islands on all fronts (freight, industry and cruise). Lochs Motor Transport (one of the main bus companies on the island) has invested in 3 brand new double deck buses (the first ever on the Outer Hebrides) to handle the cruise shuttle services into the town and free up some of their other fleet to provide vehicles for shore excursions- which provides vital employment opportunities.
Doubtless on cruise days this will produce congestion at the main tourist sites. But, bluntly tough. If you don't like that either go elsewhere on the Outer Hebrides. or choose dates when no ship is in.
