This Wednesday (23 July) Ember Bus are starting a new Dundee to Aberdeen bus via Braemar, Banchory and Aberdeen airport.
Initially it will run once a day in each direction, but extra stops and services are planned to be added in late summer.
This is the first time in very many years that there has been a Dundee to Braemar direct bus.
Hi, Stuart,
This is really exciting news! I'm assuming, since Braemar comes first on this new route, that the bus will be travelling via Blairgowrie and Glenshee, and the old "Devil's Elbow". Do you know if this bus will be scheduled to stop in Ballater and Aboyne, as well as Banchory, or will that put it in direct competition with the Stagecoach 201 route?
This will really open up new vistas to those visitors who eschew hiring a car.
Thanks for the update!
Mike (Auchterless)
Yes, the service is running via Glenshee. The only other intermediate stop currently is at Blairgowrie.
The legal background in Scotland is that an established operator can start an express route with minimal notice, in this case 2 days.
Express is defined as stops no less than 15 miles apart.
However 6 weeks notice has to be given to introduce a stopping service.
So when that happens extra request stops will be added, and the service will then compete with the 201.
The Dundee to Aberdeen fare is only £8.90, the same as their direct service. That you book up to 10 minutes before travel.
This was a complete surprise. Normally the rumour mill gets to work about Ember new routes, not this time.
Hi again, Stuart,
This bodes really well for OAPs! It would be possible to have a free day away in Braemar, without having to go all the way around via Aberdeen. Do you know how long anyone who takes this route would have on the ground in Braemar before the bus returns?
Thanks again!
Mike (Auchterless)
Dundee depart 0813, Braemar arrive 0954, Braemar depart 1639, Dundee arrive 1821.
